Old software is the way in
Almost every break in starts with software that needed an update months ago. Plugins are the usual problem. If nobody updates your website, it gets a little less safe every month it sits there. Updates are boring, and that is exactly why they get skipped.
Backups are your safety net
A backup is a full copy of your site saved somewhere else. You want a new one every day. You also want to know that someone has actually restored it once. A backup nobody has ever tested is a guess, not a plan.
Lock the front door
Use strong passwords that you do not reuse anywhere else. Turn on two step login. Remove accounts for people who left the company. Most of the real risk is not clever hacking. It is an old password that still works for someone who no longer needs it.
Update your software, keep tested daily backups, and use strong logins. Those three habits stop almost everything.
